Frequently Asked Questions

  • Mindfulness Dog Training works primarily with relationship based training principles which focus on you and your dog.

Relationship is best achieved through building a bond and providing clarity to your dog on what you want to do and we use primarily positive reinforcement to achieve this.

We do function on the scale of LIMA (Least intrusive minimally aversive) and find most dogs achieve results when we aim for positive reinforcement first, and most pet dogs can see success with this training method.

We are holistic however and understand for some adult dogs with fixed learnt behaviours may require different raining methods such as addition of verbal corrections, but we do not condone compulsion training methods which involve physical corrections.

We do not suggest training methods that goes against your principles as an owner, but we will be honest on the effectiveness eg. positive reinforcement does take longer but likely will yield more welfare friendly results vs. aversive methods that can work quicker but with poor application will yield detrimental results to the dog.

  • The timing of training depends on several factors, including the dog's age, breed, previous training, and the specific behaviours we are addressing.

    The bigger consideration is this:

    • Are you able and willing to do the homework we set out for you?

    • Are you open to being aware about your emotions/expectations that can impact training?

    • Are you okay with bombarding me with questions during sessions? (Please do!)

    • Are you ready to have a better life with your dog?

These questions in my experience impact your training time the most, but remember ultimately training does not end because training = relationship communication with your dog!

  • The minute you know you are getting a dog, we recommend prepping for their arrival and kickstarting training then!

When you are aware of all that entails in dog parenthood, you will be more prepared to tackle all that your new dog will throw at you and feel confident in navigating it!

The longer we let our dogs rehearse a behaviour, the more ingrained it will become and the harder it will be to change it.

  • Absolutely not. I am a mother myself so I get it!

At Mindfulness we work around you when it comes to kids! I adore mums and dads and will be happy to cater our sessions accordingly to ensure you are receiving the support without pressure.

Please let us know in the consultation form so that we can ensure we cater to you.

  • There is a preconception that online training is ineffective, but in my experience most situations can be navigated online as it can be as personable as In Person sessions.

    1. You will receive real-time feedback support during the 60 minute call, just like you would chatting in person.

    2. You will receive an email after with notes and details for homework, just like you would in person.

    3. This is a secret I'm going to share with you.... I rarely put my hands on dogs in sessions because I am verbally telling owners how to train as ultimately you are the ones who have to know the skills.

    4. Your dog's true behaviour will show on call as I am not there. It is also more relaxing for you as you do not have to worry about how they would respond to my presence (which I do not mind at all)!

    5. It is cheaper by 50% to do an online call!

    6. There is more flexibility in time compared to In Person sessions.

  • A better way to frame this question is this: Is guarantees something we can give to sentient animal behaviour?

Dogs are living with their own thoughts.

Because of this, it is vital that we understand how each individual dog thinks, works and finds rewards.
This can take time depending on the dog and how realistic our approach is to training.

If we are willing to be patient, realistic and put in what it takes to get there, you are likely to see change!

But like in most things in life: I cannot offer you a guarantee.

  • If you have a reactive dog with no bite history, we do work with these cases and will recommend the INTENSIVE program to ensure we provide you with the best support!

If you have a dog with a bite history or is aggressive to humans/dogs I will be able to refer you elsewhere.

We do not work with pure aggression.
